Biography

Helium Horse Fly was born in March 2009 in Liège, Belgium, when singer Marie Billy, guitarist Stéphane Dupont, bassist Dimitri Iannello and drummer Tom Malmendier met.

Helium Horse Fly’s style brings together several musical currents.  Stéphane, the group’s main composer, comes from Besançon (France), where he once had his fingers in all sorts of pies: playing in Nef des Fous (chanson française) and Daverio (chaotic destructured hardcore).  If we take into account Tom’s involvement in the free-jazz scene and Dimitri’s taste for Dadaism, it is easy to see where the diverse influences of Helium Horse Fly’s sound comes from. The group puts out a savvy mix of sombre, tortuous harmonies, shows a penchant for a particular type of rhythmic freedom and violence, and adds a touch of lyricism, which all comes together in a resolutely rock’n’roll sound carried by the enchanting timbre and one-of-a-kind world created in Marie’s vocals.

In spring 2010, Helium Horse Fly is playing its first gigs and recording its first EP, A dispute to redefine clearly frontiers between devils and angels. After a digital-only release on april 19th 2010, the EP comes out in a physical form on october 31th 2010. This release is acclaimed by the press, and the song Lights has been winning the PureDemo contest organized by the belgium radio PureFM. In october 2011, Helium Horse Fly is recording Fishing For Ghosts, its second EP, which will be released on december 14th 2011. Early 2012, Bastien Dupont replaces Tom Malmendier. The band has played in Belgium and in France (Bruxelles, Liège, Lille, Besançon, ...), and has supported bands such as Black Math Horseman, Overmars, Binaire, Aside From A Day, Generic, Lilly Wood & The Prick, …
